A Conquering Spirit
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Mobile, Alabama, from April 19-23 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
Gregory Waselkov talked about his book, A Conquering Spirit: Fort Mims and the Redstick War of 1813-1814, in which he tells the story of the Fort Mims Massacre and how the battle marked the transition from a civil war within the Creek Tribe to a war between the United States and the Red Stick warriors of the Upper Creek. The Red Sticks' victory at Fort Mims spread panic throughout the Southeastern United States frontier, and settlers demanded governmental action and fled to surrounding areas, including Mobile, Alabama. Fort Mims is now a state historic site located about 35 miles north of present-day Mobile, Alabama.
