Exit Berlin Charlotte Bonelli talked about her book, Exit Berlin: How One Woman Saved Her Family from Nazi Germany, in which she looks at a collection of letters written between American industrialist Arnold Hatch and his extended family trapped in Nazi Germany. She said the letters provide an insight into the worsening condition for Jews in Germany in the late 1930s and the mindset of American Jews and the American government during this period. The letters were collected by Luzie Hatch, a cousin of Arnold Hatch, who fled Germany for the U.S. in 1938 and acted as Arnold’s German translator. This event was held at the American Jewish Committee in New York City. close
