Secretary Eric Shinseki spoke at the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans 2014 Conference at the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel. He talked about programs such as community resource centers for homeless veterans, housing vouchers, and interactions with the justice system. At the end of his remarks he spoke about problems with the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system. Secretary Shinseki apologized for the systemic problems at VA medical facilities around the country and said the findings in the inspector general’s interim report are “totally unacceptable” and a “breach of trust” He outlined steps being taken such as contacting all 1,700 veterans on the Phoenix waiting list. In addition, Secretary Shinseki announced the removal of senior executives at the Phoenix VA center.

Later that day Secretary Shinseki resigned from his position. close
