Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Defense Department General Counsel Stephen Preston testified on the release of five Taliban detainees in exchange for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. Secretary Hagel defended the Obama administration’s decision to not notify Congress 30 days prior to the exchange. He said time was crucial and that any leaks could have jeopardized the last and best opportunity of getting Sergeant Bergdahl back.
Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was captured in June of 2009. He was accused of deserting his unit and was then captured. close
