Secretary of State John Kerry made welcoming remarks at the State Department’s “Our Ocean” Conference. He called for a single comprehensive global strategy to protect the oceans and said climate change was the biggest threat facing the oceans and the entire planet. Opening keynote remarks were made by President Anote Tong, who talked about the effects of climate change and rising seas on his country of Kiribati and announced efforts to halt commercial fishing in parts of the region. Then members of the “Exploring, Understanding, and Conserving Our Ocean” panel made remarks.
