Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) responded to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that day striking down a Massachusetts law that created buffer zones around abortion clinics. Writing for a unanimous majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said that while states can pass laws to ensure access to clinics, they cannot prohibit speech on public streets and sidewalks. Senator Markey criticized the decision for putting women “at risk simply for exercising a constitutional right.” close
