Emile Hokayem, author of Syria’s Uprising and the Fracturing of the Levant, talked about the Syrian civil war and its regional repercussions. Topics included the humanitarian and refugee crises, increased violence in Iraq, and the growing influence of the militant group ISIS.* Among his comments he called the humanitarian crisis in Syria “frightening” and said that Syrian President Assad’s main goal was to conquer territories, not people.

“Syria after Geneva, the Elections, and ISIS: Partition, Fragmentation, and Escalation” was an IISS-US Discussion Meeting.
