Gary Slater talked about the Iowa State Fair and its 160 years of history. He spoke about the fair’s role as a center for agriculture education in the state, and its close connection to presidential politics. The candidate “soap box” is an important stop for presidential hopefuls and has become an important political campaigning stage for candidates to visit during election years.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 22-26 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Mediacom cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments aired on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments aired on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
