Representatives from the Department of Justice, the Judicial Conference, the U.S. Sentencing Commission, and the Federal Public Defender testified on criminal code reform, over-federalization of criminal law, penalties, collateral consequences, and other issues considered by the House Judiciary Committee’s Over-Criminalization Task Force. U.S. Attorney Timothy Heaphy told task force members that the federalization of crime normally prosecuted at the state level and mandatory minimum sentences for drug related crime was eating away at the Justice Department’s budget and was no longer sustainable. close
