Democratic presidential nominee Gov. Bill Clinton spoke to supporters in Independence, Missouri, the birthplace of President Harry Truman. With his wife Hillary by his side, Gov. Clinton recalled the career of President Truman and called for the enactment of policies to help the American middle class, “Harry Truman’s legacy.” He criticized the Bush administration for believing in trickle-down economics, and the president for campaigning on Truman’s legacy without supporting Truman’s goals of helping the middle class. During his speech, Hillary Clinton held an umbrella over Gov. Clinton as the rain began to fall, and Gov. Clinton held up a copy of his economic plan, “Putting People First.” Following his remarks, the crowd cheered as balloons were released, and the song “Smalltown” was played over a P.A. system. close
