Kao Kalia Yang talked about her book, The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir, in which she shares her family’s experience of living in a refugee camp in Thailand before resettling in the United States. The Hmong fought against communism in Laos during the Vietnam War. They were allied with the Kingdom of Laos forces and the United States. After the Communist victory in 1975, the political movement known as the Pathet Lao responded with a campaign of near genocide, killing an estimated 100,000 of 400,000 Hmong. Many fled to Western countries like the U.S. Saint Paul, Minnesota, had the largest Hmong population per capita in the U.S.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in St. Paul, Minnesota, from July 21-24 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. close
