John Dean talked about the Watergate scandal, some of his early assignments as counsel to the president, how the idea for the Watergate break in came to be, and who was involved in the planning. Mr. Dean joined the Nixon White House in July 1970 after John Ehrlichman left to become chief domestic adviser. This was part one of a two part interview with Mr. Dean.

This is a portion of the interview conducted by Timothy Naftali July 30, 2007, in Los Angeles, California, as part of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library project to document the 37th president’s administration. close
