Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Martin Dempsey briefed reporters on the latest developments in Iraq and Syria, including the failed military rescue mission in Syria earlier in the summer. They also talked about the killing of photojournalist James Foley and the failed effort to rescue him and other hostages. Secretary Hagel called ISIS* an “imminent threat” and “beyond anything we have seen.” He said ISIS was well-funded and sophisticated in military prowess.
