George Washington and the West Edward Larson talked about George Washington’s journey to inspect his western Virginia landholdings during his retirement, and how it contributed to his interest in western expansion and inspired his efforts to link the east and west through the Potomac River.

“Washington Looks West: 1784-1786” was the first lecture in the 2014 Gay Hart Gaines Distinguished Visiting Lecturer of American History series “George Washington and the American Union.” It was held by the Fred W.
