President Obama addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. He outlined a global response to combating ISIL* and said he would continue to work with a broad coalition to “dismantle this network of death.” He repeated that the U.S. would not put in troops on the ground but instead work with local authorities. The president also acknowledged that the U.S. continues to work through its own racial and ethnic tensions, citing the preceding summer conflict in Ferguson, Missouri, between police and the African-American community. He also spoke briefly about other global issues, mentioning Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and the Israeli- Palestinian conflict.

*The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a militant group that has called itself the Islamic State. close
