Deputy National Security Adviser Antony Blinken talked about how the U.S. planned to work with allies to combat the Islamic State* and how the mission was not comparable to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Talking about the evolution of the conflict he said that ISIL was the topic of a November 2013 meeting President Obama had with then Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, but the prime minister would not act. Mr. Blinken responded to questions from members of the audience.

“U.S. Policy and the Islamic State” was the closing speech of the all-day Carnegie Endowment for International Peace conference “The Islamic State and the Middle East’s Shifting Geopolitical Landscape.”

*The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a militant group that has called itself the Islamic State. close
