First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond gave his last speech as minister before the Scottish Parliament. He said he was privileged to serve as first minister, that Scotland had changed for the better, but even better days lay ahead. He reflected the history of the Scottish Parliament, his own career, and the result of the Scottish referendum. As leader of the Scottish National Party he had led the pro-independence referendum campaign advocating for Scotland to break away from the United Kingdom. He resigned from his leadership role after Scotland voted to stay in the U.K. on September 18, 2014. He would remain a member of the Scottish Parliament. The speech ended with a hug from his successor, Nicola Sturgeon. close
