Professor Robert May talked about his book, Slavery, Race and Conquest in the Tropics: Lincoln, Douglas, and the Future of Latin America, about how Abraham Lincoln was working to prevent the spread of slavery into the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The spread of slavery was debated regularly during the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Douglas argued the country should expand into these areas and settle them as slave states. Lincoln was convinced the best way to end slavery was to prevent it from spreading any further.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana, from November 16-20 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. close
