Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) talked about growing up in Hawaii, witnessing the attack on Pearl Harbor, and how that event affected native Hawaiians and led to the Senator’s service in the Army Corps of Engineers at the end of World War II. He also spoke about the GI Bill and his work to help American veterans

This oral history interview was conducted by Terry Shima, executive director of the Japanese American Veterans Association, and is part of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. Congress established the Veterans History Project in 2000 as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. The project collects oral histories from veterans around the country and makes them accessible to the public. close
