“Fly Girls of WW II: Changing the Face of World War II” tells the stories of the U.S. servicewomen known to history as the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) who answered the call to duty in World War II. The WASPs received their military training in Sweetwater, Texas, and, after earning their silver wings, were deployed to 120 bases across the United States. Thirty-eight women died in the line of duty, but it was not until 1977 that WASPs were granted veteran status. Deanie Parish, a former “Fly Girl,” talked about her experiences as a World War II pilot as she gave a tour of the exhibit in the Bullock Texas State History Museum.
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Austin, Texas, from December 2-6, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Time Warner Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.†close
