Q&A with Dick Lehr
Dick Lehr talked about his book, The Birth of a Nation: How a Legendary Filmmaker and a Crusading Editor Reignited America’s Civil War, about the 1915 movie of the same title. The film by D.W. Griffith was shown to President Woodrow Wilson at the White House and across the nation despite attempts by African-American civil rights advocate and newspaper publisher William Monroe Trotter and others to stop it. Mr. Trotter took Griffith to task for his portrayal in the film of African Americans in the post-Civil War era. close
