Born in 1929, John James Conyers, Jr. was first elected in 1964 and in 2015 became the Dean of the House of Representatives, the longest serving member. During his tenure, Representative Conyers was one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus and was the first member to introduce a bill to make Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday. close
