Belles of Liberty
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2015 LCV Cities Tour” in Greensboro, North Carolina, from January 19-22, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Time Warner Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2.

Linda Beatrice Brown talked about her book, Belles of Liberty: Gender, Bennett College, and the Civil Rights Movement, about the February 1960 sit-in that took place at a food counter in Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina. Although it was not the first sit-in in the civil rights movement, the national press it received sparked other sit-ins throughout the country and marked the beginning of the civil rights battle in Greensboro.
