The Birth of a Nation is a 1915 three-hour silent film which traces the history of the Civil War and Reconstruction with a sympathetic view of the southern cause. Based on the novel The Clansman by Thomas Dixon, the film celebrates the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and demeans African Americans by having white actors in blackface and by diminishing their contributions to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Endorsed by President Wilson at the time as "good history", the film has also been heralded as a breakthrough in cinema technique. This is part one of two. close
