The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) considered new “net neutrality” rules, also known as “open Internet.” Members voted 3-2 in favor of Chair Tom Wheeler’s proposed rule changes that would reclassify high-speed broadband as a public utility. The rules were designed to prohibit Internet service providers from blocking or discriminating against legal content moving through their networks. It would also stop content providers from paying for preferential treatment or “fast lanes.”

The new rules were in response to a federal court decision striking down the FCC’s enforcement of net neutrality. close
