The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Johnson v. United States, docket number 13-7120. The case concerns whether possession of a short-barreled shotgun could be considered a violent felony under the Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA). Samuel James Johnson argued that possession alone of a short-barreled shotgun was not inherently violent, unlike the other violent felonies listed in the ACCA. The United States asserted that possession of a short-barreled shotgun was a violent felony because the possession of a dangerous weapon greatly increases the likelihood that a possessor will injure or kill others.

This program contains the audio recording released by the court. Still images of participants were shown on the screen as they spoke. Justice Thomas did not speak. close
