Assassination of President James Garfield Professor Ralph Nurnberger talked about the stories behind and the historical impact of the assassination of President James Garfield. President Garfield had hoped to challenge pockets of corruption in the political establishment and enact civil service reform. But, after serving as president for only 200 days, he was shot by the deranged Charles Guiteau. President Garfield died almost three months after being shot and questions linger about his medical treatment as well as the impact his death had on the country.
