Constitutional attorneys previewed the same-sex marriage cases the Supreme Court was scheduled to address the following week. Those cases involved whether the 14th Amendment requires states to license marriages between two people of the same sex, and whether licensed out-of-state marriages must be recognized. The panelists also summarized the case law leading up to the issue ending up before the Court. Speakers included Paul Smith, who in 2003 successfully argued Lawrence v. Texas. In that case, the Court ruled 6-3 to strike down a Texas' sodomy law, affecting laws in 13 other states. close
