The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Obergefell v. Hodges, docket number 14-556 Question 2, consolidated with three other same-sex marriage cases. The first question heard was whether the 14th Amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex. The cases raising that question were DeBoer v. Snyder from Michigan and Bourke v. Bashear from Kentucky.

On June 26, 2015, the court ruled 5-4 that the 14th Amendment requires states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize marriages from other states.

There was a brief interruption while a protestor was removed. close
