Josh Earnest responded to questions on a variety of issues, including law enforcement reforms, riots in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. trade policy, the National Security Agency’s surveillance authority, and Iran’s nuclear program. Mr. Earnest said Senior Adviser Valerie Jarett was in contact with local officials in Baltimore and briefed President Obama on the situation. Mr. Earnest also defended the president’s use of the word “thugs” to describe those who were looting and destroying property in Baltimore. close
