Last Slave Ships Corey Malcom talked about the final days of the transatlantic slave trade and the 1500 Africans sent to Key West, Florida, after their slave ships were captured by the U.S. Navy. The U.S., England, and other European countries outlawed transatlantic slave trade in the early 19th century, but it continued illegally for years. In 1860, U.S. Navy steamers captured three slave ships off the coast of Cuba and sent the 1500 captives to Key West until it was decided what to do with them.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2015 LCV Cities Tour” in Key West, Florida, from April 23-28 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
