During Senate leader remarks, Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), called for the Confederate battle flag to be removed from the South Carolina State Capitol. He praised Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC) for making the same call earlier in the week after after nine people were killed the previous week at an historic black church in Charleston, allegedly by a white man who had been pictured with the flag. Senator Reid talked about race in America, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and race relations. He quoted statistics about murders and mentioned mass shootings such as at a Colorado movie theater and the Navy Yard. He called for an end of hatred and violence. close
