A Senate committee hearing was held to obtain an update on the recall of defective automobile airbags manufactured by Takata and the role of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the recall and investigation. May 19, 2015, Takata expanded its U.S. recall to more than 30 million vehicles from 11 automakers, including Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. In opening statements Senator Nelson (D-FL) showed pictures of a victim and the metal fragments that injured her and Senator Blumenthal (D-CT) called for a victims' compensation fund. Dfective airbags were also shown.
