House and Senate leaders spoke at an official commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War in the Capitol Visitor Center. They were joined by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and his predecessor Chuck Hagel. A film produced for the 2014 Virginia International Tattoo and narrated by Sam Elliott was shown. The ceremony included the presentation of colors, the national anthem, and prayers. The Army Band played and sang popular songs of the era, “Respect” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” The ceremony concluded with the presentation of lapel pins to veterans and an Armed Forces medley. close
