President Obama spoke at the NAACP annual convention. He addressed the criminal justice system and called for shorter sentences for non-violent drug offenders. The president noted that in the last few decades the U.S. had locked up more non-violent drug offenders, pointing out that African Americans and Latinos had been disproportionately affected. He urged Congress to pass a sentencing reform bill by the end of the year. In addition, he called for a review on solitary confinement and urged voting rights to be granted to felons who had served their time. close
