Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Robert McDonald testified at a hearing on his department’s fiscal year 2015 budget shortfall. The secretary warned committee members of the potential consequences of a $2.5 billion budget deficit, including hospital closures and employee furloughs. Committee Chair Jeff Miller (R-FL) and committee members from both parties criticized the VA about the lack of accountability and for not revealing the budget issues sooner. Secretary McDonald said his department came to the conclusion in mid-May that they could not solve the budget problem caused by an increase in demand by veterans for health care and costly treatments for hepatitis C. He urged the committee to transfer up to $3 billion from the new Veterans Choice Program to close the budget gap. close
