Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Vice Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Paul Selva spoke at a September 11, 2001, remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial. It was a private ceremony for family members of those killed there. The ceremony included a wreath laying, the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” played by the U.S. Navy Brass Quintet, and a prayer. A moment of silence was held at 9:37 a.m. ET to remember those killed and a flag was hung on the building in remembrance of the flag plced there the day after the attack. close
