President George H.W. Bush spoke on the campus of Austin Peay University on the fourth of five campaign stops during a swing through Tennessee. Backed by students wearing red shirts emblazoned with American flags, the President proposed a compromise for a series of presidential debates between himself and his opponent Gov. Bill Clinton. The president had previously declined to participate in two debates scheduled by the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates because of disagreement over the format of the debates. The president proposed a series of four debates, with the format favored by Gov. Clinton used in two of them, and the format favored by the president in the other two. He went on to criticize the policy proposals forwarded by Gov. Clinton. close
