The Supreme Court heard oral argument in Montgomery v. Louisiana, docket number 14-280, on whether their 2012 Miller v. Alabama decision where life sentences given to juveniles were deemed unconstitutional would apply retroactively to cases prior to that ruling. Henry Montgomery was 17 when he killed a Louisiana deputy sheriff in 1963. He was originally sentenced to death but the Louisiana Supreme Court reversed it. He was retried and sentenced to life without parole. The first part of the argument was whether the U.S. Supreme Court held jurisdiction over this appeal. close
