Senate Republican leaders spoke before the president and vice president at a dinner in Union Station in Washington. Senator Bob Dole and U.S. Representative Robert Michel, in emotional tones, honored the new party leadership elected earlier in the day, and paid tribute to the outgoing Bush administration.} Following laudatory remarks by Vice President Dan Quayle, the president lauded the performance of his administration by singling out members of his cabinet, the vice president, his wife, and members of the Senate leadership for praise. Speaking from a podium in front of a number of American flags, the president thanked his supporters in the Senate, and noted his inability to convey the successful hard work of his cabinet members during the campaign. close
