In an excerpt from a session of the German Bundestag, Chancellor Kohl spoke to advocate passage of the Maastricht treaty. The treaty, which requires approval from all of the countries in the European Community to become effective, would create closer political and economic ties among the countries in Western Europe. The treaty passed by a wide margin in a vote taken at the end of the legislature’s session. Translation from German to English was by voiceover. close
