Members of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords debated a bill that would change the current regulations concerning the transference of inherited titles under British laws. Currently, the titles are passed down to the oldest son of a titleholder. The legislation would allow the titleholder to choose to pass the title down to the firstborn child of the titleholder, whether the recipient was male or female. Opponents of the measure argued the new regulations would result in confusion and passage of the title out of the family name. The legislation was defeated in a vote following the debate. close
