Tennesee Governor Ned McWherter announced his appointment of Harlan Matthews, deputy governor of Tennessee since 1987, to the Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect Al Gore following Gore’s resignation from the seat on January 2, 1993. Mr. Matthews would fill the Senate seat until November 1994. Mr. Matthews spoke briefly and attended the news conference with his wife. close
