The House Rules committee heard testimony on amendments to the rule for House debate on H.R. 1, the Family and Medical Leave Act. The family leave legislation passed in the House of Representatives in previous years, only to be vetoed twice by President Bush, with the House unable to overturn his veto. The act would require companies with 50 or more employees to allow up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for employees with newborn children or sick family members. close
