The Defense Base Closure & Realignment Commission heard testimony from DOD Secretary Les Aspin and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Colin Powell on recently announced plans to close 31 major U.S. military installations and cutting back 130 other bases. The Department of Defense said the cutbacks would cost 27,000 military jobs, and save $3.1 billion per year starting in the year 2000. Secretary Aspin illustrated his remarks with graphs and charts on the defense cuts, and said further budget cuts in the Clinton economic plan would make the case for further military cutbacks in the future. close
