Margaret Low Smith introduced a day-long series of panel discussions on race relations and criminal justice. Then Ta-Nehisi Coates, national correspondent for The Atlantic, and James Bennet, the magazine’s president and editor-in-chief, talked about the intersection of race and criminal justice in the United States. Mr. Coates talked about how mass incarceration had disproportionately affected black families in the U.S. He also compared media and law enforcement reactions to the current rise in heroin use by rural whites with that of the crack epidemic in the 1980s. A video narrated by Harvard sociologist Bruce Western was shown.
