New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) talked about efforts in his city to reduce both its incarceration and crime rates in tandem, the challenges to those efforts, and the lasting effects of Hurricane Katrina on criminal justice and public education policies.

“Crime and Punishment in New Orleans” was part of the day-long event, “Race and Justice in America: An Atlantic Summit,” held in the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. It was inspired by the October 2015 cover story, “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. close
