President Obama awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 17 individuals. The medal is presented each year to those who have contributed to the nation’s interests in areas such as world peace, security, culture, or other endeavors. Among the 2015 recipients were Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Mays, singer and songwriter Gloria Estefan, Maryland Senator Senator Barbara Mikulski, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and violinist Itzhak Perlman. President Obama also awarded four medals posthumously to Shirley Chisholm, the first female African American elected to Congress; Native American fishing activist Billy Frank Junior; New York Yankees baseball great Yogi Berra; and civil rights activist Minoru Yasui, who challenged the forced internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. close
