News headlines were read and phone lines were open for viewer calls on House Speaker Paul Ryan’s response to Donald Trump’s call for a ban on Muslims traveling to the U.S.. Speaker Ryan said that Mr. Trump’s proposal is “not conservatism,” not what the Republican Party stands for, and “not what this country stands for.”

Billy House, congressional correspondent for Bloomberg News, spoke by phone about congressional efforts to avoid a government shutdown before the December 12 deadline.
