The committee heard testimony from Department of Defense personnel and academics on the ban against homosexuals in the U.S. military. Specifically, the committee sought testimony on how bans on homosexuals, or the lack thereof, affects the armed forces of other countries around the world. President Clinton moved toward repealing the ban early in his presidency, but called for a six-month delay in dealing with the ban while congressional hearings could investigate the effect of such a repeal on the U.S. military. close
